Major railway boost: Projects worth over Rs 80,000 crore underway in Odisha

Odisha is witnessing an unprecedented scale of railway development, with projects worth more than Rs 80,000 crore currently under execution across the state.  These include a mix of new line constructions, multi-tracking, electrification, station redevelopment, and flyover projects aimed at boosting connectivity, capacity, and passenger convenience.

According to sources, as many as 59 railway stations in Odisha are undergoing modernization under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 2,379 crore. 

The redevelopment works include improved station access, elevated approach roads, upgraded circulating areas, modern waiting halls, escalators, lifts, Divyangjan-friendly facilities, better passenger information systems, and commercial spaces.

In addition, Odisha has been sanctioned over Rs 25,000 crore in the last year alone for eight new railway projects, along with large-scale multi-tracking and flyover works designed to decongest routes and strengthen freight as well as passenger movement.

Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, who recently reviewed the progress of the Bhubaneswar station redevelopment project, said the ongoing works reflect Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming Indian Railways into a world-class network.

The future-ready projects are expected to not only ease travel for millions of passengers but also provide a major thrust to Odisha’s industrial growth, regional connectivity, and economic development.
