Autorickshaw falls into canal in Cuttack
A major tragedy was narrowly averted in Salepur on Tuesday after an auto-rickshaw carrying 10 school students overturned into Canal No. 5 near Balisahi. The accident triggered panic in the area, but all the children were safely rescued, while the driver sustained only minor injuries.
According to reports, the vehicle lost balance while negotiating a narrow stretch near the canal. Despite water in the channel, locals and rescuers managed to pull the students out unharmed. Their condition is stable, much to the relief of worried parents and residents.
The auto driver said the accident happened when he swerved to avoid a stray dog that suddenly crossed the road, causing the vehicle to lose balance and topple into the canal.
Soon after the mishap, the Tehsildar visited the site and reviewed the situation. He noted that the accident was partly caused by the narrow road and its poor condition after recent heavy rains. The official assured that steps would be taken to enhance safety in the area.
However, concerns have emerged over the fact that as many as 10 students were travelling in a single auto-rickshaw, raising questions on safety practices and enforcement of transport regulations.
Local residents have demanded that the administration address these issues and ensure safer commuting arrangements for school children.
