SJTA chief Arabinda Kumar Padhee proposes construction curbs near Puri's Jagannath & Gundicha Temples to preserve Kalinga architectural legacy and cultural heritage.

Puri Srimandir

The Chief Administrator of the revered Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Puri, Arabinda Kumar Padhee, has advocated for a unique policy governing construction works around the iconic Srimandir and Gundicha temples.

In a letter, Padhee called upon the Urban Development Department to devise a specific policy for regulating existing and future buildings near the Jagannath Temple and Gundicha Temple in Puri.

Highlighting the need to protect the security and cultural heritage of these historic shrines, Padhee has proposed the importance of creating a conducive environment that respects the traditional architecture of the state.

Maintaining Kalinga Architectural Tradition

It is proposed that any new construction in the vicinity of the temples should adhere to the traditional Kalinga architectural style. Specifically, the guidelines suggest restrictions on the height of surrounding buildings, ensuring that new constructions do not overshadow these sacred sites.

Moreover, their facades should reflect this historic design and adhere to the architectural style of Kalinga, promoting visual harmony with the area’s traditional aesthetics. Such measures aim to safeguard the cultural significance and architectural integrity of the temples.

Regulation of Signage and Beautification Efforts

The request also stresses the importance of enhancing the area's beauty and utilising vacant spaces to maintain a tranquil, spiritual environment around these ancient temples. This proposal was initially discussed at a high-level meeting of the temple management committee on 25 May, urging the Odisha government to draft a comprehensive policy.
