In a first in Odisha, bird survey has kicked off at Satkosia sanctuary in Angul district on Sunday to collect information on varieties and species of birds found in the forest.

According to sources, as many as 30 youths from Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Bihar have participated in the bird survey which will continue till March 22.

Apart from experts, those who have a special interest in birds have also been included in the exercise.

The bird survey will be carried out using eBird application, sources informed.

In the annual bird census, the head counts of only water birds are carried out. But this is the first avian survey in Odisha, informed Saroj Panda, Satkosia Divisional Forest Officer (DFO).

“Those who have expertise and interest in birds have been invited to participate in the exercise. The survey began today and will conclude on March 22. The volunteers will update information on birds in the tiger reserve on the eBird application. Later, we will share the details about the types and species of birds found in the sanctuary,” Panda added.
