Many parts of Odisha are experiencing heavy rainfall since Thursday under the influence of an active low pressure area formed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood. 

"Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood, a Low Pressure Area has formed over Northwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwards with height," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.  

Sharing latest update, the IMD said that the low pressure area formed yesterday is active today over the north-west Bay of Bengal adjoining Odisha and West Bengal coasts. The system is likely to move in the west-northwest direction for the next 2 to 3 days towards North Odisha-North Chhattisgarh.

"Due to the influence of active low pressure over the Bay of Bengal, rains are lashing various parts of the state. Orange alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rains in some districts today," the IMD Bhubaneswar tweeted. 

Sharing data about rainfall, the IMD said Puri recorded 66.2 mm rainfall till 5.30 am today, Bhubaneswar 57.6 mm, Balasore 42.6 mm, Gopalpur 35.8 mm, Chandbali 16.7 mm Paradip 14.7 mm and Jharsuguda 13.4 mm.

Day 1 

Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm)very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Nawarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri. 

Also possibility of Extremely heavy rainfall(> 20 cm) at one or two places over the districts of Boudh, Kandhamal and Kalahandi. 

Yellow warning: Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur , Nuapada, Kendrapada, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh also Thunderstorm with Lightning very likely to occur over the districts of Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Angul, Cuttack, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Khorda, Puri, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Boudh.

Day 2

Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm)very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Nuapada. 

Yellow warning: Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Khorda, Puri, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh.

Day 3

Yellow warning: Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nawarangpur, Nuapada, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh.
