Puri Srimandir

Lord Jagannath’s Bada Maha Snana, a rare and significant purification ritual, was performed at Puri Srimandir on Monday morning after a small child vomited near the Bhitara Katha.

The incident took place shortly after the completion of Abakasha Niti. Darshan of Lord Jagannath had begun, and heavy footfall was reported as it was the second Monday of Sawan when this incident occurred near the Bhitara Katha.

Darshan Suspended For Complete Cleaning And Sanctification

Following the morning rituals like Mangala Alati, Mailama, Tadapa Lagi, and others, darshan had already commenced when the child vomited near the Bhitara Katha. The incident led to an immediate halt to public viewing. As per tradition, the Bada Maha Snana Niti was undertaken to purify the area thoroughly before resuming any further rituals.

Thousands Gather For Sawan Monday Darshan

Being the second Monday of the holy Sawan month, lakhs of devotees had thronged Srimandir to witness the darshan of Lord Jagannath. The sudden disruption affected the flow of devotees, but the temple administration proceeded with the purification ritual as mandated by custom.

After the Bada Maha Snana and the following rituals are completed, Lord Jagannath will be offered Kotha Bhoga. This practice ensures the spiritual and physical sanctity of the temple is preserved before darshan is resumed.

When Bada Maha Snana Takes Place

This special ritual, different from the regular daily proceedings, is carried out when blood is spilled due to an injury or when incidents such as vomiting or urination occur within or near the Bhitara Katha area.
