A classroom turned into a scene of panic on Thursday afternoon when lightning struck at Khami village Upper Primary School in Korei block of Jajpur district, leaving three girl students injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred while classes were in progress. As the windows of the classroom were open, a lightning bolt struck close to the side where some students were seated. Unfortunately, three girl students sitting near the open window became victims of the strike.

The injured students were rushed to the Jajpur Road Community Health Centre with the help of teachers and villagers. Medical authorities confirmed that two of the girls suffered serious injuries, while the third escaped with minor injuries. After receiving prompt treatment, the condition of all three was reported to be stable.

The sudden incident created panic among other students and staff, who were left shaken by the unexpected turn of events. Villagers gathered at the school soon after, expressing concern for the children’s safety and demanding better protective measures.

Doctors have advised continuous observation of the injured students, though their condition is said to be out of danger. The incident has once again highlighted the risks schoolchildren face during thunderstorms in rural Odisha.
