A labourer was allegedly thrashed and stoned to death by miscreants in front of his son in Cuttack’s Barang police limits on Tuesday. The victim, identified as Tofan Samal from Kendrapara, was working as a welder for a construction company in the area for the past 12 years.
According to sources, Tofan and his son were at home when nearly twenty assailants, including three women, approached and attacked them. Upon witnessing his father being assaulted, the son rushed to help but was also targetted by the attackers.
Later, despite being rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Tofan was pronounced dead. Following the incident, the deceased's family filed a complaint with the Barang Police.
“We were just about to eat when nearly 20 people started pelting stones at our house. Before we could react, they forced their way inside and attacked my father. They assaulted me when I tried to intervene. The miscreants stole my phone and chain. My father urged me to run and hide, warning me that I would be killed too. I watched them kill my father right before my eyes,” said the victim’s son.
“My brother worked here for the past 12 years without any issues. Nearly two weeks ago, he called his son to stay with him for his studies. The attackers killed my brother in front of my nephew. No one helped him, and the entire slum was involved in the attack. My nephew can identify all the assailants,” said the sister of the deceased.
The deceased’s brother alleged, “The slum residents attacked my brother, but the motive behind the assault is not clear. We demand justice and want all those responsible to be punished.”
Meanwhile, police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
