Koraput’s Machkund dam releases first floodwater of the season
Incessant rainfall over the past few days in Lamtaput block of Odisha’s Koraput district has pushed the Machkund Dam to near-capacity levels, prompting authorities to open two of its sluice gates as a precautionary measure.
According to official sources, this marks the first floodwater inflow of the 2025 monsoon season in the region. The water level in the dam, which has a maximum capacity of 2,590 feet, has now reached 2,588 feet, approaching the danger mark. With more rain predicted, officials have decided to release the excess water.
To ease pressure on the structure and ensure dam safety, the Water Resources Department has opened gate number 6 and 7 of the dam. Around 2,000 cusecs of water is currently being discharged into the Chitrakonda reservoir downstream.
“This is a routine flood control measure. We are monitoring the inflow closely. If rainfall intensifies, more gates may be opened,” said an official.
The Machkund Dam, which plays a crucial role in power generation and irrigation, often sees heavy inflow during the monsoon months due to rainfall in both Odisha and bordering Andhra Pradesh.
With more showers expected, local authorities have been put on alert. Officials are monitoring both upstream and downstream areas and are ready to take further action if needed. So far, there are no reports of flooding or damage in nearby villages.
