PM Modi addressing at the previous conference
The enactment of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) marks a significant milestone in reshaping India's justice system. Rooted in the principles of dignity, justice, and citizen empowerment, these reforms (fresh set of criminal laws) aim to foster a modern, inclusive approach to law enforcement and societal well-being, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said.
Prime Minister hailed the new criminal laws as a paradigm shift in the justice system. He emphasised the principles of 'Citizen First, Dignity First, and Justice First’. He urged police to shift from a 'Danda' approach to one driven by 'Data’, and creatively engage society to convey the laws' spirit. Special emphasis was placed on sensitising women about their rights and ensuring their safety, enabling them to work fearlessly "anywhere, anytime."
5 key points stressed by the PM were:
• To realise the vision of Vikshit Bharat by 2047, Indian cops should transform itself into a modern and world-class police force.
• The enactment of BNSS was a paradigm shift in the criminal justice system.
• New criminal laws were framed with the spirit of ‘Citizen First, Dignity First, and Justice First’.
• Police to focus on women's safety by ensuring women could work fearlessly ‘Kabhi Bhi Aur Kahin Bhi’.
• Police Stations ought to use social media for disseminating positive information and messages for the benefit of citizens.
“We had extensive deliberations on ways to make policing more modern and data-oriented. We also discussed ways of furthering public safety and increasing connect with the people, especially in remote areas,” the Prime Minister had written on his ‘X’ handle.
Meanwhile, ahead of the conference being held for the first time in Bhubaneswar, the PM said, “There will be extensive deliberations on enhancing India’s internal security apparatus. Different aspects relating to policing and improving public safety will be discussed.”
