Pathani Samanta Planetarium
Astronomy, astro-physics and space science in particular evokes some kind of curiosity among people. But do you know how many planetariums are there in Odisha? Let’s find out details of the existing ones in the state.
Since its inauguration, the Pathani Samanta Planetarium has been a major centre of attraction in Bhubaneswar. Named after the legendary astronomer of Odisha, Chandrasekhar Singha Harichandan Mahapatra Samanta, popularly known as Pathani Samanta, it was dedicated to the public on January 8, 1990.
As per available information, around 1, 60,000 people visit the planetarium every year since 2013, after digitization during 2012. About 1, 45, 119 visitors had visited the planetarium during 2024-25 (up to January 2025). The total revenue collection stood at Rs 34,53,460.
The second planetarium of Odisha is in Burla, Sambalpur which has been named after eminent aerospace scientist and the 12th President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The planetarium was inaugurated in September2017.
Around 39, 713 visitors visited the planetarium during 2024-25 (up to January) to witness the shows displayed in Odia, Hindi and English. The total revenue here, during the period, stands at Rs 7, 51, 510.
The Pathani Samanta Museum at Khandapada was established in December 2016. Around 15, 365 visitors visited the museum during 2024-25. There is no entry fee for the visit.
