Students protesting at KIIT University
The suspicious death of a Nepali student at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar has sparked controversy, with students questioning if there was an attempt to hide facts surrounding the incident. The varsity attempted to suppress the facts, they alleged on Tuesday.
Questions have mounted over the hurried manner in which the girl student’s body was relocated without the presence of police, as would be customary in such circumstances. This led to heightened speculation and unrest among the university students.
Additionally, the disappearance of the deceased's mobile phone and laptop contributes to the prevailing mystery and urging further inquiry into the matter, the students stated.
“She (Prakriti Lamsal) died by suicide inside her hostel room at around 5.30 PM, when our programme (Fest) was underway and most of us had left for it. We are not sure if she was alive and some help could have been extended and whether she could have been saved.
“However, some students and wardens who were present nearby at that time told that some help could have been provided, and no one provided her immediate help,” a protesting female student of KIIT said to OTV.
“The scenario (alleged broken relationship, blackmail, and harassment) which was going on (for the past several months) was earlier brought by the girl to the knowledge of faculties for several times that she was being harassed by the boy (accused Advik Srivastava).
Unfortunately, no action was taken and the faculties ignored the things saying it was a ‘private matter’,” the protesting girl student alleged.
“We were at the Fest and rushed to the spot after hearing the news. When her (Prakriti’s) body was being shifted, we raised our voices and wanted to see her with an intention if any chance were there to save her. They (KIIT authorities) suddenly lathi-charged us and drove us away,” a protesting male student stated.
“Probably, what I feel, they wanted to tamper evidence to save the institute’s image. She might have left a note, which they tried to hide,” the male student added.
