Alleging corruption in the distribution of rice under the Public Distribution System (PDS), scores of beneficiaries from six wards gheraoed the cooperative samiti office at Taras Panchayat under Rajkanika block of Kendrapara district. The beneficiaries alleged that the concerned dealer embezzled 2 months' PDS rice.

“The secretary was suspended over the irregularities and he had assured to provide rice on 25th. It is now several months that we have not got the rice. The administration is also not taking any step in this regard,” alleged Sarat Barik, a local resident.

It is alleged that Taras panchayat samiti secretary, who is the dealer, has been embezzling the PDS rice of the beneficiaries. As per the reports, despite repeated complaints to the administrative officials, no step has been taken in this regard.

Protesting such a callous attitude, the beneficiaries gheraoed the cooperative samiti office for two hours.

District civil supplies officer, Prashant Kumar Gantayat said “After getting information, the district enforcement squad had conducted an inquiry and it was found that the dealer had less stock and it was proved that people had not received rice. He was suspended and the dealer was asked to provide rice.”

Gantayat admitted that it was proved that the beneficiaries had not received rice for two months and appropriate action will be taken after getting the report.
