Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation played a crucial role in India’s independence. Gandhi, a visionary leader, employed nonviolent civil disobedience to challenge British colonial rule. Through acts like the Salt March and peaceful protests, he inspired millions to demand autonomy and justice. His unwavering dedication ultimately paved the way for India's independence in 1947.

During his freedom struggle, he visited several parts of the country including Odisha. In 1934, Gandhi visited Odisha to participate in Hairjan Yatra and to promote Khadi, village industry, women empowerment and education. During his two-day visit to the state, he stayed at Kaitha Ashram at Mahanga in Cuttack district.

After reaching Bairi station, he was given a rousing welcome before being taken to the ashram. Later, he addressed a gathering near Champapur market. The entire episode of Gandhi’s two-day visit was captured in lens then and these photographs are now igniting Gandhism in the locality. Besides, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was also set up near the market in memory of his visit to the area.

Moreover, the ashram has also preserved the bed, pillow, bedsheet which were used by Gandhiji during his visit. The ashram, which was set by Gandhiji’s disciple Gobinda Chandra Mishra, is now being run as Gandhi Sikhyashrama.

“Mahatma Gandi reached Bairi Station on 21 May 1934 as part of his two-day visit to Odisha. He launched a Padyatra after reaching here. He was invited to Odisha by his disciple Gobinda Chandra Mishra,” said Pratap Kumar Acharya, an educationalist.

Meanwhile, the local residents have demanded a memorial school tag for Gandhi Sikhyashrama and to carry out necessary developmental work at the educational institution.

“When Gandhiji left Mahanga, he had then urged to develop the Sevashram into an educational institution to promote education in the area. Later Mishra, converted the Sevashram into Gandhiji Sikhyashrama,” said Dilip Rout, a local resident.

Banalata Dalei, another local said, “I urge the Odisha government to accord memorial school tag and develop the Gandhi Sikhyashrama which has been converted into a school.”
