Intense heat is likely from April to June across India, predicts IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra. The Maximum temperature in most parts of Odisha could remain above normal during April and May, the IMD regional centre head Manorama Mohanty had previously said.

Intense ‘heat wave’ to prevail between April-June: IMD DG

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted unusually high temperatures from the month of April to June this year. This warning came on Monday from the IMD’s Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, who urged the public to exercise caution as several regions across the country, including Odisha, brace for an intense heat wave.

Despite this, Mohapatra has dispelled concerns over any El Niño impact, stating that it is not expected during the upcoming monsoon season. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to manage the anticipated scorching heat.

IMD DG Mohapatra predicts

“El Niño conditions are not anticipated during the monsoon season. The period from April to June is expected to be hotter than usual, with an increased likelihood of heatwave days in several states,” the IMD DG stated to a national news agency.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Jharsuguda recorded the highest maximum (day) temperature at 42°C, making it the hottest place in Odisha. The temperatures recorded at other places are: Sambalpur (40.6°C), Hirakud (39.9°C), Rourkela (38.6°C), and Bhubaneswar (36.2°C).

“The Maximum temperature in most parts of Odisha could remain above normal during April and May. However, in Western Odisha, particularly in Bolangir, Bargarh, Nuapada, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh, the probability of heat is more,” the IMD regional centre head Manorama Mohanty had previously said to OTV.

“On average, heatwave conditions will persist across Odisha for about a week during this season,” the IMD regional centre head had further said.

Besides, IMD today predicted rain and thunderstorm activities in different districts of Odisha in the coming days. The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph in some districts till April 5, 2025.
