Reinforcing the State unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), former Chief Managing Director (CMD) of NALCO, Tapan Chand joined BJP on Wednesday.

Chand joined at the party office in Bhubaneswar in the presence of BJP's Odisha chief Manmohan Samal and other senior leaders.

Chand has been involved in politics since his student days. He served as the students' union president of Utkal University (Vani Vihar) too. He later joined the corporate sector with Vizag Steel Plant and NALCO.

Addressing the BJP members after joining the party, Chand said, “India is now considered as a powerful nation. And BJP is world’s largest political party. The BJP is the largest platform for development and prosperity of India. That is why I joined it today.”

"I have worked in many organisations for 34 years including Coal India, Vizag Steel, and NALCO. I have had an opportunity to implement the development agenda of PM Modi during my stint at NALCO. So, development has become my habit. PM Modi’s dedication, hard work and work ethic have inspired me," said Chand.

Apart from Chand, other leaders including social workers from Birmaharajpur and some ex-servicemen also joined the BJP today.

It is pertinent to mention here that many leaders from the BJD recently joined the BJP. Former minister and sitting MLA from Telkoi constituency Premananda Nayak and former Dhamnagar MLA and BJD’s rebel leader, Rajendra Das joined the BJP on Monday.

Similarly, sitting MLAs Arabinda Dhali and Pradeep Panigrahi have also joined the BJP. Apart from them, senior leader and former Malkangiri MLA Mukunda Sodi, who resigned from the primary membership of BJD on Saturday, also joined the saffron camp.
