Inmate 'dies after suicide bid' in Odisha jail; family seeks probe

Raising concerns over the safety of inmates in Keonjhar district jail, a prisoner allegedly died following a suicide attempt.

The deceased was identified as Ajay Das of Bhodabahali village under Sadar Police limits. He was lodged as an under-trial prisoner for the last 11 months in connection with a rape case. 

As per reports, the jail authorities informed the family on Friday that Ajay attempted suicide in the jail. They rushed him to the district headquarters hospital in a critical condition. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where he died late on Friday night.

The brother of the deceased, Bijay Das said, "My brother was in jail in connection with a rape case. I received a call yesterday from the jail authorities that my brother was serious and he was admitted to the district headquarters hospital.”

“I demand an investigation into why my bother took such an extreme step inside the jail,” he added.

No comments were received from the jail authorities.
