An injured tusker has been spotted roaming in the Atei forest near Kolimati in Keonjhar district, triggering concern among local residents and wildlife officials. Locals from Nuapada area, under the Kolimati forest range, first reported sightings of the tusker limping and moving slowly through the jungle. Preliminary investigation by the forest department suggests that unidentified miscreants had injured the elephant several days ago, possibly in a poaching attempt.

Acting on the alerts, the forest department has initiated a tracking operation to locate the animal and provide it with urgent veterinary care. “The elephant is in pain, but stable. Our veterinary team is on the ground, working carefully to administer treatment without further distress to the animal,” a senior forest official informed.

The incident has once again brought to light the escalating human-wildlife conflict in Odisha, largely attributed to habitat loss and shrinking forest cover. As elephants increasingly venture into human settlements in search of food, encounters often turn violent, sometimes with tragic consequences for both sides.

Officials have appealed to residents in nearby villages to remain vigilant and report any abnormal movement of wild animals. Meanwhile, an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the suspected poaching attack.

The forest department has reiterated its commitment to wildlife protection and assured that all necessary steps are being taken to safeguard the injured elephant.
