Injection meant for child administered to mother
A serious allegation has emerged from Khariar Sub-Divisional Hospital in Nuapada district involving a case of medical negligence. It has been alleged that instead of administering an injection meant for a malaria-affected child, a nurse of the hospital wrongly administered it to the mother.
According to reports, Raju Tandi from Bara village under Khariar block had brought his malaria-affected two-year-old son for treatment at the hospital. After consulting paediatrician Dr. Mahendra Majhi, the doctor prescribed a paracetamol injection for the child.
However, in a shocking turn of events, it is alleged that the on-duty nurse, Rashmita Panda, mistakenly administered the injection not to the child, but to the mother, Anju Tandi. The injection was reportedly given in her abdomen. The mother, visibly in pain, has shown marks and swelling at the injection site, substantiating her claims.
"Instead of administering the injection to my malaria-affected child, the nurse administered it in my abdomen. I am feeling pain in the spot. We are coming to the hospital with patients in the hope of proper treatment. However, they are very much careless," rued the child's mother, Anju Tandi.
When questioned, nurse Rashmita Panda initially denied the incident but later admitted the possibility of a mistake.
"The mother was carrying the child while administering the injection. She must have reacted while giving an injection to her instead of the child. A little bit of blood stain might have dropped on the abdomen of the mother while giving an injection to the child," said nurse Rashmita Panda.
The medical in-charge Dr. Mahendra Majhi, has acknowledged the error and assured that an investigation into the matter will be conducted.

"As the child was suffering from malaria, paracetamol injection was advised. I don't know exactly what happened. We will launch an inquiry into the incident," said Dr. Mahendra Majhi.
The incident has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among patients and attendants at Khariar hospital.
