Police and the officials of the Weights and Measures Department busted an illegal manufacturing unit engaged in making weighing machines in Cuttack on Monday.

As per reports, electronic weighing machines were being manufactured in a house in the Nuapatna area under Madhupatna Police limits. The unit had no permission or license from the authorities concerned to make such machines.

Officials of the Weights and Measures Department had received a complaint from a small trader that the weighing machine he had purchased was defective. Thereafter, the department officials gathered information about the unauthorized manufacturing unit and raided the house.

The officials have seized as many as 25 weighing machines and various components used in the manufacturing of such machines.

The manufacturer only had a license to sell such machines but no trade license or legal permission to manufacture them, sources said.

It was stated that spare parts/components were procured from outside the state and machines were being sold to small traders.

An official involved in the raid said that the department had complaints about defective machines. “After the raid, we came to know that spare parts were assembled and weighing machines were made. As many as 25 machines are being seized. Further action will be taken against the manufacturer,” he added.

Another senior official said that the manufacturer has a sales license, but in his Salipur address, he has no license for manufacturing. It is an unauthorized unit, he added.
