Unregulated activity inside the Sarangapani Reserve Forest in Boipariguda block in Odisha’s Koraput district has raised concerns among local communities and authorities. An Andhra Pradesh-based private company has been accused of operating without following legal procedures, allegedly damaging forest land and posing safety risks to villagers in the area.

Reports of Construction Beyond Sanctioned Scope

As per the allegations, the company was given a contract for a single project, but it is reportedly undertaking construction of a third project without formal approval. The activities are said to be occurring during the day within forested areas, which has drawn scrutiny due to the potential impact on both the local ecosystem and public safety. Though earlier coverage of the issue prompted a site inspection by a joint committee led by the Sub-Collector, villagers allege that no concrete action has followed, and work continues unchecked.

Forest-Dependent Communities Express Concern

A local resident expressed concern over the implications for safety and livelihoods. “People frequent this area during the day, and our cattle graze here regularly. Many households rely on forest resources for their daily needs. These blasts not only degrade the environment but also pose serious safety risks to villagers who pass through this area. There is a real possibility of someone getting seriously injured.”

Another local resident pointed to the lack of communication from the company. “No prior information was shared with us about the project. There was no public meeting, and none of our local representatives were involved. We only became aware once the blasting had already begun. The operations are being carried out without any visible safety measures, and our villagers are facing significant difficulties. We urge the administration to investigate the matter and ensure our safety.”

Local Authorities Not Informed, Says Sarpanch

The Sarpanch of the village confirmed that neither he nor the community was informed prior to the commencement of work. “This company from Andhra Pradesh began blasting without informing or seeking consent from the village. Neither I nor the villagers were consulted. If the situation continues, we will organise a protest and approach the district authorities to raise our demands,” he stated.

He added that the company has not responded to concerns raised by locals. “The blasting activities are damaging our forests, destroying the local flora, and harming the nearby hills. They did not listen to me or any of the villagers.”

Project Allegedly Linked to Meenakshi Development

The activities in question are reportedly linked to the Meenakshi Project. Local sources allege that the company initiated work following a visit to the area with a government official, after which regular blasting operations began. The ongoing work is said to be affecting both the natural environment and the livelihoods of people dependent on the forest.
