Child thrashed with slippers by kin in Jajpur
A disturbing video showing a young child being mercilessly beaten with slippers by a youth in Jajpur district has sparked widespread outrage after going viral on social media.
The harrowing visuals, reportedly from Patrasahi village under Kaliapani police limits, show the minor crying and screaming in pain while being kicked and slapped without intervention from bystanders.
According to initial information, the accused is the child's elder brother, while the child’s father is reportedly absent, and the mother is mentally unstable. The incident occurred late at night and was reportedly captured by local residents, whose footage has since triggered widespread condemnation and calls for urgent action.
The video, which has been widely circulated, depicts the minor being dragged and hit repeatedly in a deserted area. Despite the child’s screams, no one is seen intervening to stop the abuse, raising concerns about community apathy and the vulnerability of abandoned children.
Eyewitnesses and residents claim that the child has been living in distress for some time, and this may not have been an isolated act of violence. Authorities were alerted after the video surfaced online, prompting immediate administrative attention.
Speaking to the media, Jajpur’s Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) confirmed that the child will be rescued immediately and placed under safe custody.
“As soon as the matter came to light, the IIC Jajpur reached the spot along with a team and rescued the child. The matter is being taken very seriously. We will ensure the child’s safety and initiate strict legal action against the perpetrator,” the CDPO said.
Kaliapani Police have also launched an investigation into the matter. A formal case is expected to be registered under the Juvenile Justice Act and relevant sections of the IPC dealing with cruelty to minors.
Meanwhile, authorities have appealed to the public not to circulate the video further, citing the child’s privacy and dignity, and have promised that swift justice will be delivered. However, no comments could be received from the police regarding the further course of action for the accused.
