Hirakud opens 6 more sluice gates, SRC issues alert for 10 districts

Following heavy rain in the upper catchment area, Hirakud reservoir's water level rose, prompting dam authorities to open six more sluice gates. Currently, excess water is being discharged through 14 gates, leading to increased water levels in Mahanadi river. By 8 am today, 5.78 lakh cusec of water was flowing. The Special Relief Commissioner has issued an alert to 10 districts and warned residents in low-lying areas.

Hirakud releases excess water

Following incessant rain in the upper catchment area, water level in Hirakud reservoir increased on Friday. Subsequently, the dam authorities decided to open six more sluice gates to release excess water.

With the opening of six more gates, the excess water is currently being discharged through 14 gates.

After the opening of 14 gates, water level in Mahanadi has increased further. Currently, by 8 am today, 5.78 lakh cusec of water was flowing through Mahanadi.

Considering the increase in water level in Mahanadi, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has issued an alert to as many as 10 districts. These districts are Sambalpur, Sonepur, Nayagarh, Angul, Boudh, Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara. 

An Advisory has been issued to keep vigil on the people residing in low-lying areas. People have been cautioned not to commute on the bridge over which water is overflowing.

As per reports, several farmlands in Banki have been submerged with back water. Excess water is overflowing on the roads in some places in the State.
