Hirakud dam’s earthquake safety to be inspected
Hirakud dam’s structural and seismic safety will be inspected by an expert team of MNIT, Jaipur.
As per reports, a team of experts from MNIT, Jaipur is visiting Hirakud dam on October 21 and will stay till October 23. During their stay, they will evaluate the structural and earthquake safety of the dam.
Informing about the dam being selected as a pilot dam from Odisha for structural and seismic safety evaluation and the expert team’s visit to the dam, the office of the chief engineer, Dam Safety, Secha Sadan, Bhubaneswar on Thursday wrote a letter to the chief engineer & basin manager, Mahanadi Basin, Burla.
The office of the chief engineer also sought certain data required by the expert team from the chief engineer & basin manager in advance so that they can help the experts in assessing the safety of the dam. In the letter, they have been asked to submit their report by October 15.
They have been asked to furnish details on design flood event criteria, rainfall and runoff data, flood event records, hydraulic data including flood routing and flow measurement data, reservoir data, gate and spillway data, structural design and drawing including foundation details, geological information about the dam site, borehole logs and geotechnical characterization report (wherever available), geophysical test reports (if any), dam instrumented data including pore pressure measurements, earthquake monitored data at the site including the time-history records, annual temperature variations of the water and on the of the dam, and wind effects and material properties and their deterioration compared to those considered in design/construction.
