High-resolution AI cameras to guard Similipal against poachers, wildfire

The ongoing measures to enhance security at Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) are all set to get a boost as the high-resolution AI (Artificial intelligence) cameras will be installed at strategic locations.

The AI-cameras will help enhance security and surveillance mechanisms inside Similipal. The technology will be helpful for the authorities to track the movements of poachers and initiate swift action against them. Similarly, as the AI cameras have 360-degree movement, These cameras can capture high-resolution visuals which will help the staff to get real-time data from a vast area.

Senior officials informed that 2000 towers would be installed in 2750 sqkm of area inside Similipal. The AI-camera towers would be installed with a 15 to 20 km distance. This is the first of its kind project to be implemented in the country.

“The cameras can focus on objects, and movements within a radius of 15 kms. The high-resolution “thermal cameras will move every three minutes. The staff can immediately swing into action in case of fire and entry or movement of poachers is detected,”said Similipal deputy director, Dr. Samrat Gaud.

Mayurbhanj DFO, A. Uma Mahesh said, “The AI cameras have a radius of 5 to 10 cameras and provide real-time data.”
