High gold prices to take sheen off Dhanteras! Bhubaneswar showroom owners think otherwise

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Rising gold prices in Bhubaneswar could affect Dhanteras sales, yet showroom owners remain optimistic due to upcoming marriage season.

Keeping Dhanteras in mind, the jewellery showrooms across Odisha have left no stone unturned to allure customers. They have all been decked up with glittering colourful LED lights and flashing signboards, displaying the attractive offers they are providing.

However, it is believed that the ever-increasing price of the yellow metal may wean customers away from buying jewellery, putting paid to all this razzmatazz.

The yellow metal has become Rs 17,000 costlier within one year.

Last year Dhanteras time, 10 grams of 22-carat gold was selling at Rs 56,000 in Bhubaneswar. Today, it is being sold at Rs 73, 150.

At the same time, the price of 24-carat gold is selling at Rs 79,800.

“We didn’t have any plan to buy gold jewellery. But we are buying as a wedding ceremony is ahead. The price is too high. Had it been a bit lower, we would have bought more of it,” said Sabita Debata, a customer.

Another customer, Binodini Sahu said, “As we belong to a middle class, our budget doesn’t allow us to buy gold jewellery.  Yet, we have to gift our sons and daughters. The price has forced us to buy jewellery of lesser weight for daughter.”

On the other hand, the showroom owners are hopeful that they will do a brisk business this time. They think so because last year there were no marriage dates before and after Dhanteras and this time around, the marriage season will start immediately after this festival.

The showroom owners across Odisha have bought new designs of jewellery weighing more than 10 quintals, informed sources.

“Compared to last year’s price, the price of gold has increased manifolds this year.  Yet, we hope we will have a good business as marriage season is ahead,” said Subash Chandra Das, store manager, Epari Sadashiv Jewellers.

Similarly, the marketing manager of Malabar Gold and Diamonds, Siddheswar Rath said, “The price is definitely high. If the trend of the last seven days is considered, I can say the response is good. During Dhanteras, Diwali and Akshaya Tritiya times, people get not only good offers but also better designs. As marriage season is ahead, we are keeping our fingers crossed.”
