The confusion over the identity of the third victim in the Hi-Tech tragedy came to an end after his DNA report confirmed the identity on Tuesday.

Additional DCP Prakash Pal, who was looking into the dead body mix-up case, informed that police have received the DNA report. As per the DNA report, the third body is that of Dilip Samantaray as the samples matched with his mother.

Before his death, the third victim had claimed to be Dilip Samantaray while undergoing treatment at the ICU of Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital in Bhubaneswar. However, before that, the hospital authorities had declared one of the burn victims as Dilip and handed over the body to Dilip’s family for last rites. Unfortunately, Dilip’s wife was crest-fallen after the demise of her husband and committed suicide. At that time she was pregnant.

Days after the last rites, a strange twist came when one victim believed to be Jyoti Ranjan Mallick came out of the ICU and claimed that he was actually Dilip Samantaray. The next day, he also succumbed; prompting Dilip’s family to allege that the medical intentionally killed him after he revealed his true identity.

The body received earlier by Dilip’s family was suspected to be that of another victim Jyoti Ranjan.

Police had taken samples from Dilip’s mother for DNA matching. His body has been preserved at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, and police had announced that the body would be given to the family only after the DNA report was available.

Later in the day, police handed over the body of Dilip to his family at AIIMS in Bhubaneswar after his identity was confirmed. Dilip’s mother was staging a dharna demanding the handover of her son’s body.

Notably, three of the four persons injured in the AC compressor explosion on hospital premises have passed away while one person is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
