Heavy rain triggers flood-like situation in Jharsuguda’s Laikera panchayat
Incessant rainfall over the past few days has triggered a flood-like situation in several villages under Laikera Panchayat in Jharsuguda district. The overflowing Hatia River has entered low-lying areas near Rengalbeda and Agria Pada, submerging homes and disrupting normal life.
According to sources, floodwaters entered multiple houses, with water levels reaching ankle to knee-deep inside homes. In many places, the force of the water has damaged doors and entryways, leaving families distressed and vulnerable.
In Rengalbeda village, the floodwater is flowing at a height of nearly 2.5 feet over the roads, cutting off access to several areas. Meanwhile, panic gripped the residents of low-lying settlements, forcing many to flee to safer, higher grounds.
The situation remains tense, with villagers calling for urgent relief and evacuation measures. While no casualties have been reported so far, locals are facing acute difficulties in accessing food, clean water, and medical assistance.
“We had no idea the flood was coming. All our belongings are underwater, and my house has been damaged. I don’t even know where I’ll keep my livestock now,” said a flood-affected resident.
Echoing the same concerns, another resident said, “The relentless rain has devastated our village. We’ve never witnessed anything like this before. In fear, many villagers have fled to safer places.”
