The family members of the Gram Rojgar Sevak (GRS) Sukanta Kumar Panigarhi, who died allegedly after being attacked by a sharp weapon on Friday, suspected that the murder could be politically motivated.

Sukanta was working as a GRS in A. Karadabadi and Sankuru Panchayat.

According to the sources, Panigrahi was travelling on the road when a stranger asked him for a lift.
After Panigrahi allowed the stranger to get on his motorcycle, the stranger allegedly attacked him with a sharp weapon and fled from the spot. The incident took place on Antarpada road under Balipadar police station limits of Ganjam district today.

As a result of the attack, Panigrahi sustained critical injuries. Soon, the onlookers rushed him to the Community Health Centre (CHH). As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Berhampur’s Polosara Hospital for further treatment. However, he was declared brought dead by the doctors.

On being informed, the police reached the spot and initiated a probe into the matter.

“A stranger asked my son for a lift and later stabbed him. He was working as a GRS and was good to the people. We suspect the murder is politically motivated. We want justice for our son and the accused should be punished,” said Panigrahi’s mother.
