Group clash erupts in Ravenshaw University during torch rally

A group clash erupted at the Ravenshaw University in Cuttack on Wednesday evening. As per reports, the clash erupted between ABVP and other student organisations during a torch rally demanding no change in the name of the University.

Sources said that the torch rally was conducted by the ‘Save Ravenshaw Legacy’ forum from the varsity campus to College Square. Following the development, there was a group clash after some students protested against the entry of outsiders inside the campus.

Later things became normal after the police reached the spot and pacified both groups.

“We don’t have any issue if the alumni of Ravenshaw come to the varsity. But many other people who were not the students of Ravenshaw are entering the university campus to do politics. Some outsiders attacked a varsity student by slapping and kicking him. Is it correct?” asked Nitesh Kumar Sahu, a student leader.

“It has been done intentionally. It is a conspiracy by the authorities to break the unity of the students. We want to make the people of Cuttack aware that this kind of a programme is going on in Ravenshaw,” said Muskan, AIDSO leader.

A few days back, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan suggested that the name of the Ravenshaw University should be changed. Terming it as his personal opinion, Pradhan had called for a debate over the matter.

The Minister even questioned the role of Ravenshaw (Thomas Edward Ravenshaw) after whom the university has been named.

No comments were received from the University authorities and the police in this regard.
