GPR survey begins around Sun temple in Konark
In a bid to trace the habitational profile of the Sun temple complex at Konark, a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey was carried out on the premises of the world heritage site by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) with the help of National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) of Hyderabad on Monday.
As per reports, Ground Penetrating scanning of up to 15m is being done through radio web during the survey. ASI informed that the area will be excavated if any stone lump and stone structure are found under the soil.
A three-member team of experts is carrying out the survey and it will continue for two days. On the first day, survey of around 100 square metre area was conducted.
As per sources, the GPR survey would reveal the habitational level, water contour and other details of the area. According to literature available about the site, there were around 20 temples around the Sun temple.
“As per myth and legends, there might be some monumental structures beneath the ground which have been gradually destroyed. We have found two structures through the GPR survey,” said geologist Manas Ranjan Swain.
