Unable to bear the death of his mother, a youth reportedly hanged himself at his home in Kanut village under Bolangir’s Belapada block.

The deceased has been identified as Drona Mahakud, son of Malati Mahakud.

As per reports, an LPG cylinder blast on February 10 at Kanut village resulted in the injury of six persons from two families. Out of the six injured, five were from one family. Malati Mahakud was the sixth person.

Following the blast, all the injured were admitted to a hospital in Rourkela.

While three persons from one family died under treatment, Malati died at Rourkela yesterday. Unable to bear the loss, her son took his own life by hanging with the help of one of his mother’s sarees at his home.

Meanwhile, some youths in the village were seen resorting to door-to-door fundraising to collect funds to bring the bodies back to Belapada from Rourkela and to perform their last rites.

“Three persons of that family have already died. Two others are battling for their lives. So we decided to collect some money from the villagers and donate it to them,” the neighbour of the deceased Jyoti Panda.
