Gopalpur gang-rape: Odisha DGP directs Crime Branch probe

Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania has ordered the transfer of the Gopalpur Police Station case (186/16.06.2025) to the Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW & CW) of the CID-Crime Branch, Odisha Police.

As per reports, the team of CAW & CW has already reached Gopalpur and started an investigation into the incident. This case has been treated as a Red Flag and the investigation is taking place under the direct supervision of Inspector General  (IG)CAW & CW Shyni S.

"Considering the sensitivity of the case, the Crime Against Women and Children Wing of the Crime Branch has been ordered to investigate the incident. The team has already arrived in Gopalpur. Our effort will be to finish the investigation as soon as possible and expedite the prosecution. As many as 10 persons involved in connection with the case have already been arrested. The case has been marked as 'Red Flag' and it will be investigated accordingly. We will ensure all aspects of scientific investigation into the incident," said Odisha DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania.

The case involving the alleged gang-rape of a 20-year-old college student on the Gopalpur sea beach of Odisha’s Ganjam district on Sunday evening has been registered under Sections 71, 296, 351(3), and 310(2) of BNS.

As per police sources, the student was allegedly gang-raped by around 10 men after the assailants overpowered her male friend.

The incident has reportedly sparked widespread outrage, with the police arresting 10 youths in connection with the case.

Strict punishment for gang rapists: CM

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has strongly condemned the gang rape incident involving the young woman at Gopalpur beach. 

Terming the act as a heinous crime against humanity, the Chief Minister has directed authorities to ensure exemplary punishment for the culprits.

The Chief Minister emphasized that those responsible for such barbaric acts will face the harshest legal consequences.

Earlier, the Superintendent of Police (SP)-Berhampur, Saravana Vivek M had informed that at least four minors are among the ten accused.
