Gita Mehta’s concern over VK Pandian surfaces in new book, sparks fresh turmoil in BJD

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

A new book by journalist Ruben Banerjee reveals late Gita Mehta’s alleged concerns about VK Pandian’s influence on her brother, former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik. The revelation has sparked internal unrest in the BJD, with debates over Sujata R. Karthikeyan’s unofficial role, leadership ambitions, and rising discontent among senior leaders after the party’s recent electoral defeat.

A recent revelation from senior journalist Ruben Banerjee’s book has brought to light a significant development involving Gita Mehta, the late sister of former Odisha Chief Minister and present Leader of Opposition (LoP) Naveen Patnaik.

According to the book, Gita Mehta had expressed concerns about VK Pandian’s influence on her brother. This conversation reportedly took place during her treatment at a medical facility in September 2023, where she voiced her apprehension to a close associate.

The book notes that Gita Mehta, in a weakened state, had questioned whether Pandian was leading Naveen down the wrong path. These comments were reportedly made shortly before her passing. While there has been no official response from Pandian or the BJD regarding these claims, the matter has triggered renewed political discussion.

Meanwhile, within the BJD, there has been growing internal discourse about the role of Pandian and his wife Sujata R. Karthikeyan. Some leaders are speculated to be supporting Sujata’s potential future leadership within the party. After the party’s electoral defeat, discontent over the couple’s conduct during Naveen’s hospitalisation has reportedly intensified among some senior members.

Further controversy emerged after a video from a press conference at Sankha Bhawan went viral, showing senior BJD leaders present with Sujata at a medical facility. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty responded by launching a scathing attack without naming anyone, while other leaders like MP Debashish Samantaray and Ranendra Pratap Swain have previously raised concerns indirectly, reflecting the internal unrest.

Questions have now been raised about Sujata’s involvement in party activities despite not being an official member of the BJD. Legislator Pradeep Dishari has stated that Sujata has never participated in any formal party forums to date.

As debates continue within the party, attention remains on the evolving political dynamics and what direction the internal developments might take.

“Gita Mehta had apprehensions that Naveen was perhaps being misguided by Pandian. This has gained relevance due to the recent political dynamics and internal unrest in the party. In the present context, this has also raised a big question. Even senior leaders of the party are reluctant to this,” political analyst Prasanna Mohanty said.
