Ganja smuggling racket busted in Sonpeur; over 5 quintals of contraband seized, 4 arrested

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Police in Sonepur district seized over 5 quintals of ganja and arrested four peddlers, highlighting the Tarbha region's role as a smuggling corridor. The operation, supervised by the SP, raises concerns over interstate networks and possible police involvement.

Seized Ganja

The Tarbha region of Sonepur district has increasingly turned into a black corridor for ganja smuggling, with large quantities being seized frequently. On Friday, police seized another 4 to 5 quintals of ganja following a dramatic chase on the Bhaliamunda–Sonepur road. Four ganja peddlers were arrested on the spot.

Recent Bust Under SP’s Direction

According to reports, the local police had recently achieved consistent success in halting the illegal trade after seizing 6 quintals of ganja from the same area. However, the main supplier had evaded arrest in that case. This time, under the direct supervision of the Sonepur SP, a special team tracked and caught the suppliers at the Sonepur border.

Weighing In Magistrate’s Presence

As per NDPS Act procedures, the seized ganja was being weighed in the presence of a Magistrate. Preliminary estimates suggest the haul exceeds 5 quintals and is worth between Rs 5 crore and Rs 6 crore.

Network raises wider concerns

The continuing seizure of large hauls from Tarbha has raised serious concerns over how regularly ganja is smuggled through the area. Reports suggest the contraband is routed via Sambalpur and Bargarh to Madhya Pradesh and other states. Past seizures have pointed to involvement of interstate smuggling networks.

Suspicion Over Police-Mafia Nexus

In a worrying development, some police personnel were recently found linked to a smuggling racket, with evidence unearthed from Boudh. Suspicions remain that more officials may be involved, which is why the SP led Friday’s operation in secrecy. Sources suggest that major mafia links could emerge in the coming days, with further action likely.
