Gang violence sparks fear in Bhubaneswar, 2 injured for refusing to pay extortion money

In a chilling reminder of rising criminal activity, Bhubaneswar once again witnessed a violent gang attack involving sharp weapons. The latest incident occurred on late Saturday night near Lingipur square under Dhauli Police Station limits, where a group of miscreants reportedly assaulted two local men after allegedly demanding extortion money.

Extortion demand turns violent

The victims have been identified as Shiba Prasad Sethy and Swapneswar Panigrahi. They were allegedly attacked by a group of eight to ten youths when they reportedly refused to pay a demanded extortion amount. The gang reportedly arrived on motorcycles and launched a sudden assault in front of a business establishment.

Initial investigations point to Happy Bhoi and Uttam Mahapatra from the Sishupalgarh area as key accused. Reports suggest some of the attackers were recently released on bail and have resumed their criminal activities with renewed aggression.

Police action 

Following the complaint, one of the accused- Uttam Mahapatra has been detained for interrogation.

However, Commissionerate Police, which promotes the slogan “We Care, We Dare,” is now facing public criticism for its perceived inability to contain rising gang violence.
