While Ganesh Puja is being celebrated with religious fervour and much enthusiasm in all the educational institutions across the State, tragedy has struck a private university in Cuttack.

A student of the private varsity at Naraj was electrocuted to death and two others were critical on the occasion of Ganesh Puja on Tuesday.

As per reports, some students of the private varsity came in contact with an 11kv electric wire while carrying an idol of Lord Ganesh to their institution on a tractor. While one died of electrocution, two others sustained serious injuries.

The injured have been rushed to a private hospital in serious condition for treatment.

The authorities of the varsity reached the hospital while the guardians of the deceased and injured students were on their way to the hospital. As some of the injured students are from outside the State, their relatives may reach the hospital late.

As per an eyewitness, the Ganesh idol, which the students were carrying on the tractor, had a flag. The flag came in contact with the 11 kv wire. As a result, the vehicle was charged, and in the process, a student died on the spot and many others sustained serious injuries.
