A wet weekend is in store for parts of Odisha with the IMD on Thursday predicting that an approaching western disturbance is likely to trigger moderate-to-heavy rainfall in the state.

The IMD has predicted that a fresh disturbance will be active from today (March 23) and the effect will be visible in several parts of Odisha on March 25 and 26. Several parts of the State are likely to receive light to moderate showers.

IMD scientist Umashankar Das said, “Yes, there is a possibility of another western disturbance in India on March 23. Rainfall accompanied by hailstorms and thunderstorms coupled with the gusty surface wind will start from March 23 night and will soon reach Odisha by March 25.”

“Parts of Odisha will receive moderate rainfall on March 25 and the coastal regions of the State might receive heavy rainfall on March 26,” he added.

The forecast of another western disturbance has triggered concern among farmers who suffered a severe loss due to the heavy rainfall and hailstorm a few days back. Heavy rainfall coupled with high-velocity wind wreaked havoc on standing crops in several districts.

This has been a huge blow to the farmers as crops and vegetables which were ready for harvest have been completely washed away in the torrential rain.

While the farmers are under severe mental stress due to the loss, the news of another western disturbance has added to their woes.
