Fresh low pressure to bring heavy rain to Odisha
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal by tomorrow evening. The developing system is expected to deepen monsoon activity and sustain heavy showers across the state through September 3, according to official forecasts released on Monday.
Further, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Koraput after weather offices recorded intensified rain in these districts. A statewide yellow alert has also been declared for all districts, signalling the possibility of widespread rainfall and localised disruption over the next few days.
The alerts come even as several places in the state continued to be battered by intense showers and flooding concerns.
According to the weather reports, the interior and southern districts of Odisha could see very heavy downpours.
Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi have been flagged for rainfall amounts in the range of 12 to 20 centimetres in short periods, prompting heightened vigilance among district administrations.
Along with heavy rain, authorities cautioned about thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph in many areas. Such conditions increase the risk of damage to weak structures, disruption to road travel, and danger to standing crops and open-air activities.

This forecast followed earlier IMD advisories that rainfall intensity would rise over a four-day window and that several northern districts, including Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj, had already been placed on special alert for extremely heavy showers.
