At least five persons lost their lives and 19 others were grievously injured in two separate road accidents in Odisha on Sunday morning.

In the first accident, a pickup truck carrying passengers collided head-on with a truck at Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district on NH-49.

As per reports, four persons in the pickup truck lost their lives and nine others were seriously injured in the mishap that occurred at around 10:30am on Sunday morning.

All the injured were rushed to Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

Following the mishap, Lakhanpur police reached the spot and sent the bodies for autopsy. An investigation has started to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.

In the second accident, one person died on the spot after the Bolero he was travelling in hit a Hyva truck near Aradi chhak in Bhadrak in the wee hours of Sunday.

10 persons including five children were also injured in the mishap and they have been admitted to Bhadrak Hospital for treatment. Out of them, six injured were later shifted to Cuttack SCB hospital after their health condition deteriorated.

As per reports, the passengers in the Bolero were returning to Balasore’s Gopalpur after darshan of Lord Jagannath in Puri when the mishap occurred.

While the reason for the accident is still unclear, it is suspected that the Hyva truck was in the wrong lane when the mishap occurred..

Bhadrak Rural police have launched a probe into this connection. The driver of the Hyva truck fled the spot following the mishap.
