An elephant accidentally fell into an abandoned well near Sagajuri village of Badamal range under Rairakhol division in Sambalpur district in the wee hours of Saturday. The cow-elephant was rescued by forest officials after an hour-long arduous operation.

The villagers woke up to the distressed trumpets of an elephant. They rushed towards the direction from where the trumpet was coming and found that an elephant was in an abandoned well and was trying desperately to come out of it.

They immediately informed the Forest department. Later Forest staff from Badamal range reached the spot and without losing any time, launched a rescue operation.

A JCB machine was engaged to dig up a trench from one side of the well. When the trench was completely dug up, the elephant came out of the well and ran towards the nearby Sagajuri reserve forest jungle.

It is worth mentioning that a baby elephant that had fallen into an abandoned well was rescued by the forest officials with the help of the villagers in Basiapada forest under Jujumura police limits in Sambalpur on May 1.

Hearing the distress trumpets of the baby elephant as well as the mother elephant, villagers rushed to the spot and noticed the baby elephant was trying hard to come out of the well.

They immediately informed the Forest department. A team from the department reached the spot and launched a rescue operation, with the help of the villagers.
