In a shocking development, a female Sub-Inspector (SI) of Odisha Police has brought a sexual harassment allegation against the IIC of Phiringia police station in Kandhamal district.

As per reports, though the victim had lodged a complaint against accused IIC Ramesh Pradhan in 2019, no case was registered then. Subsequently, the victim wrote letters to higher authorities, but it was in vain. Then she moved to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking justice.  After launching an inquiry into the incident, the Commission asked Odisha DGP to register a case. Following an order by DGP, the Odisha Crime Branch registered a case in this connection. Subsequently, a special team has been formed to investigate the incident.

Following the incident, question marks have been raised over the honesty, sincerity, efficacy and transparency of Odisha Police.

“An internal complaint committee had been formed as per the order of NHRC to look into the allegation. Based on the report of the committee, NHRC ordered us to register a case in this connection and start an investigation into it. As per the order, Odisha Crime Branch has registered a case and a lady DSP is investigating the case,” said Odisha DGP Arun Kumar Sarangi.

“Other officers have been given the responsibility to look into the other allegations of the female SI. We will ensure an impartial investigation into it,” he added.
