A man practicing medicine by identifying himself as a doctor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences of New Delhi and Bhubaneswar has been arrested from a clinic at Dengaustar in Sanakhemundi in Ganjam district on Monday.

The accused has been identified as Subhrajit Panda, a resident of Sanda village in Dhenkanal district.

According to sources, Subharajit, whose highest educational degree is Plus 2, was also running a clinic in Ranihat area in Cuttack and treating patients.

He used to take the help of the medicine representative to treat the patients and prescribe medicines, sources informed.

The matter came to the fore after a woman suffered kidney ailments and had to undergo dialysis in Bhubaneswar after consuming the medicines prescribed by the fake doctor.

Acting on the allegations of the victim’s family, the police launched an investigation and found the doctor to be fake.
Recently, Subharajit had tied the nuptial knot.

In 2020, he was arrested by Telangana police for attending a conference of doctors by impersonating himself as a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO). Since 2020, he is on bail and the matter is still sub-judice.

"He (Subhrajit) was treating patients at Dengaustar since the last six months and would visit his clinic once a month. Besides, he has been practicing in Cuttack for the last one year. Acting on a tip-off, Digapahandi police launched a sting operation and he was caught red-handed. He has been arrested under various Sections of the IPC, Orissa Medical Registration Act and Clinical Registration Act,” said Saravana Vivek M, Berhampur SP.

“All his certificate including specialisation certificates from Germany, and fellowship certificates are fake. A case was registered against him in Hyderabad in 2020 and he was lodged in jail for 15 days. Now he is on bail and facing trial. We have seized his vehicle, medical instruments and medicines,” the top cop said.

On the other hand, the accused claimed he is a post-graduate in microbiology and has good knowledge of medicines.
“The case is sub-judice so I don’t want to say anything. But, I am a post-graduate in microbiology from Osmania University in Hyderabad and have sufficient knowledge of medicines,” Subhrajit said.

Meanwhile, the Commissionerate Police has launched a search operation at the rented house of the fake doctor in Cuttack.
