Explosion at firecracker godown in Bhubaneswar triggers massive fire, nearby hostel damaged

A massive fire broke out following a blast at a firecracker godown near the Infocity area in Bhubaneswar on Monday. The intensity of the blast was so high that the whole facility caught fire and the walls developed multiple cracks. The sound of the blast was heard miles away.

A hostel was located near the warehouse and the glass windows of the institution were shattered, and debris scattered across the area. 

On getting information, the Odisha Fire Services Department personnel swung into action and doused the flames. However, the firefighters had to take extra precautions as there were chances of more firecracker explosions at the unit.

“The fire has been completely extinguished, and we are currently checking for any remaining firecrackers. Upon arrival, we witnessed firecrackers exploding on the top floor of the house,” said Fire Services Personnel.

“After seeing the news on television, I rushed to the site since the house owner is my relative. I am deeply shocked by the incident,” said a relative.

Eyewitnesses described the blast as deafening, with a large column of smoke rising from the site. 

As the investigation continues, the authorities are working to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion and ensure that such an incident does not recur. 

While no loss of life has been reported in the mishap, the incident has raised serious concerns about safety protocols around sensitive areas like firecrackers godowns, especially in residential and commercial zones in the smart city.
