Former MLA and Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly, Maheswar Mohanty was rushed to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after he fell ill on Tuesday.

As per initial reports, Mohanty, who had represented the Puri Assembly Constituency, was reportedly diagnosed with a mild brain stroke. He is currently under treatment at the hospital.

Informing about his health, son Sunil Mohanty said, "His (Maheswar Mohanty) condition is stable now and he is under 24*7 medical supervision.He is not put under ventilator support. Though he has an oxygen mask over his face."

"I would like to assure his suuporters and well wishers that his health is stable. Please keep him in your prayers so that he gets well soon enough," Sunil added. 

A lawyer by profession, Mohanty completed his LLB from Utkal University and MA in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University.

He has won five times from Puri Assembly Constituency. Out of that, Mohanty won once on Janata Dal ticket and four consecutive times on Biju Janata Dal (BJD) ticket.

He is associated with many non-political organisations as ex-officio member and president. He has also served as the Chairman of Puri Municipality.

It is pertinent to mention here that Mohanty was shot by miscreants back in February 21, 2014 near Amala club in Puri when he was the Revenue Minister of Odisha. He had sustained bullet injuries on his hand and shoulder.
