The mortal remains of eminent theatre personality Sachhi Das were consigned to flames at the cremation ground in his ancestral village Anandapur under the Bari block of Jajpur district on Thursday.

He passed away at the age of 91.

Das has left indelible marks in film and theatre worlds. Be it acting or directing in films, serials, operas or in theatre, he did them with great panache.

While his directorial, ‘Saguna Basichi Dena Melai’ is one of the most popular opera plays, he will also be remembered for other plays like ‘Kie Neigala Jaiphulaku’, ‘Painkali Bajei De’, ‘Bichara’, ‘Nila Akasha Dura Banai’, ‘Jane Raja Thile’, ‘Rati Go Tome Katha Kaha’, ‘Sesha Shrabana’, ‘Kahani Na Janapatha’, to name a few.

His play ‘Abujha Rajaku Palabinda Mantri’ was felicitated at the all-India level. His contribution to the entertainment world is immense. He wrote as many as 33 theatre and opera playbooks. His passing away is viewed as an irreparable loss to Odisha theatre.

Before proceeding to his native place, his mortal remains were first taken to Rabindra Mandap and then to Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi compound where people associated with the theatre fraternity offered their last tributes.

BJP state president Manmohan Samal took to his X handle and expressed grief and extended his condolences to the bereaved family members.
