The entire world recently witnessed the devastation caused by deadly earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. What is more concerning for Odisha is the fact that Angul district’s Talcher and its adjoining areas have been identified as Zone III (Moderate Damage Risk Zone).

The information was given by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Pramila Mallik in Odisha Assembly in response to a question by MLA Nauri Nayak.

According to Mallik, Government of India’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Building Materials & Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC) had published the Earthquake Hazard Zoning Atlas of India in 2006. In the Atlas, Talcher and its adjoining areas have been identified in the Zone III (Moderate Damage Risk Zone).

According to the Minister, adequate training has been imparted to the ODRAF personnel on collapse structure, search and rescue operations. Adequate equipment for carrying out the search and rescue operations have also been provided and advisory has been issued for the construction of earthquake resistance houses in various zones, Mallik added.
