Dolphin census begins in Odisha's Bhitarkanika and Gahirmatha; know its significance, expectations
The eagerly awaited dolphin census has commenced today in the serene waters of notable Bhitarkanika and Gahirmatha in the coastal Kendrapara district of Odisha.
This vital environmental survey aims to count dolphins covering the stretch from Dhamra to the Devi estuaries, including all significant rivers and creeks within Bhitarkanika National Park, nestled within the Rajnagar forest division.
Teams Conduct Comprehensive Survey:
The census, scheduled to span three days, involves all five forest ranges under the supervision of the Rajnagar division. A dedicated team of nine groups have been assembled for the census, each comprising four experienced members. The Gahirmatha range has been allocated the largest number of teams, with three in operation. Meanwhile, Mahakalpara and Kanika ranges each have one team, and both Rajnagar and Kujang ranges host two teams apiece.
Utilising Advanced Equipment:
To facilitate accurate and efficient data collection, the teams have been equipped with binoculars, GPS (Global Positioning System) devices, cameras, and handy cams. These teams are tasked with undertaking a meticulous documentation of dolphin presence and behaviour.
Daily Operations and Methodical Approach:
The fieldwork begins each day at 6:00 am early in the morning and concludes by 12:00 pm noon, providing ample time to capture sightings and collect data within the specified areas. Such efforts are crucial for understanding and conserving these charismatic marine mammals, which hold a cultural and ecological significance in Odisha.
Record Dolphin Sightings Expected:
Since 2015, Odisha's State Forest and Environment Department has been systematically conducting census counts of dolphins within its territory. Last year, the Rajnagar Forest Division, which falls under the department's purview, recorded an estimate of over 500 dolphins. Encouraged by favourable weather this year, officials anticipate setting a new record for dolphin sightings.
Favourable Conditions:
The improvement in weather conditions this year has been identified as a significant factor contributing to the potentially higher sightings. Officials from the State Forest and Environment Department have expressed optimism about the current survey outcomes, stressing the importance of favourable environmental factors in wildlife monitoring.
Looking Ahead:
As the annual census progresses, researchers and officials remain hopeful that this year's numbers will exceed previous records. The focus remains on preserving these aquatic mammals, which play a crucial role in the ecological balance of the region.
Significance for Conservation:
Efforts such as this census play a critical role in the conservation strategy for dolphins in Odisha, highlighting the state’s rich biodiversity and the urgent need to preserve it for future generations. The consistent annual surveys aim to monitor the dolphin population effectively, which is vital for conservation strategies.
