Discontent grows within Odisha Congress over new party committee

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Discontent rises in Odisha Congress as senior leaders are excluded from the new committee. Bhakta Das faces challenges uniting factions amid OBC reservation debates, with key figures absent at major events. This has become a poor show for Bhakta Das, a political analyst opines.

Recent protest by Congress over OBC reservation

Tensions increase within the Congress party in Odisha following the recent leadership shuffle, as senior figures find themselves excluded from the party's newly formed committee.

Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Bhakta Das has been vocal about his intent to reunite past leaders in a united front. Yet, the discontent grows, particularly visible in the discourse surrounding Other Backward Class (OBC) reservations, highlighting internal rifts.

A number of veteran party leaders, omitted from the new committee, have opted out of participating in initial events, symbolising deeper issues. Notably absent from a protest at the Chief Minister’s residence were figures such as Jayadev Jena, Ramesh Jena, Mohammad Moquim, Sofia Firdous, and Ramachandra Kadam. Srikant Jena, known for his outspoken support of OBC reservations, was also missing.

Bhakta Das was seen accompanied by only a handful of loyalists, including Ashok Das, Mangu Khilla, and stalwarts like Sarat Rout and Sura Routray, who remain actively engaged.

As the 30-member committee, announced on May 17, 2025, omits both seasoned as well as younger leaders, political analysts point to this episode as deep-rooted factionalism within Congress, posing a stern test for Bhakta Das’ leadership.

As this traditional leadership struggle resurfaces, all eyes are on Bhakta Das to see how he will address the growing dissent and restore unity.

“We had asked everyone to come. Maybe others will come in the evening. Many were present during the morning, and the rest will come now,” Bhakta Das said.

Reacting to this, political analyst Prasanna Mohanty stated, “It seems that Bhakta Das has been cornered. In a sense, he has been isolated and ostracised. Several senior (Congress) leaders were not found in the protest staged by the party.”

“It gives a clear indication that resentment is brewing within the Congress party over PCC reformation. This has become a poor show for Bhakta Das,” the political analyst added.
