A dead crocodile was spotted floating in the Baitarani River near Aranyanivas under the Chandbali forest range of Bhadrak district, causing concern among locals and wildlife officials.

The crocodile, estimated to be over 5 feet in length, was first noticed by residents on Thursday. However, the exact cause of its death and how it ended up in the river remains unclear. The carcass, seen drifting from Aranyanivas, is reportedly moving towards Dhamara, carried by the river’s current.

Crocodile population in Baitarani

The Baitarani river is known to be home to a significant crocodile population. According to official records, over 44 crocodiles inhabit its waters, making it an important ecosystem for the species in Odisha.

Speaking on the incident, Chandbali forest range officials stated that recovery of the carcass has not yet been possible as it continues to float downstream. Forest personnel have been alerted and instructed to monitor the situation closely.

Details after post-mortem

A clear understanding of how the crocodile died will only be possible after recovery of the carcass and a post-mortem examination, said the range officer.

The incident has highlighted the need for increased monitoring of the river’s biodiversity and potential threats to the reptile population.

Wildlife authorities are expected to carry out a detailed investigation once the carcass is retrieved.
